Lawmakers Prepare for Battle over New Coronavirus Relief Bill
- Although the Senate on Tuesday approved a new, $484 billion coronavirus relief bill, the battle for the next one has already begun.
- Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has already said there will definitely “be a phase four bill,” noting it will need to be “big, strong and active.” Speaker Nancy Pelosi backed his comments, saying about $4 billion will be needed to fund states’ transitions to vote-by-mail programs before the November election. Meanwhile, senators Bob Menendez and Bill Cassidy have unveiled a proposal for a stimulus package that will cost more than $500 billion.
- However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he’s not on board with another costly stimulus package. “I think it’s also time to begin to think about the amount of debt we’re adding to our country and the future impact of that,” he says. “Let’s weigh this very carefully, because the future of our country in terms of the amount of debt that we’re adding up is a matter of genuine concern.”
- Where is all this money coming from? Would you rather get another handout, or go back to work?
