The Three Kings, or Magi of the Bible (Melchior, Caspar & Balthazar, in case you’ve forgotten that Sunday School lesson) were said to have brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the Christ Child. Sounds exotic and costly. In my house, the Wise Men have banished the evil elf on a shelf, and made the mantle their domain alone. Fittingly. Still, the real hero in my place is the Chocolate Fairy. Never seen, sometimes only identified for a mere moment by a fleeting crinkly-sound, like a plastic bag or foil wrapper. Could it have been? No. Gone in an instant. My hyped-up holiday imagination on overload. And yet….the glorious shimmery ooey-gooey nougat-filled nut-laden chocolate offerings appear without warning, gifts from a happy dimension beyond this one, placed almost lovingly on an otherwise average catch-all shelf.
Here’s the best thing about it though…no matter how much you treat yourself, they just keep reappearing! So before you go to bed tonight, spin around three times while saying “Hershey’s! Hershey’s! Hershey’s!” and maybe the Chocolate Fairy will visit you.
