How quickly we got to the month of June! I almost didn’t notice that the annual Barksdale Air Force Base Open House and Air Show didn’t happen this year. That’s partly because I got to see the Blue Angels practice at their home base in Pensacola back in May. I highly recommend going to that if you happen to be in the area when they’re home.
I’ve been going to the Barksdale Air Shows since I was a kid. Seeing the base that is such a big part of our community, the exhibits, and of course watching the amazing skills of the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels is something I never get tired of. The Barksdale Air Show will return in 2019 and every odd year following. This is due to the high cost to the base and the resources it requires not only for the days of the show, but also for the extensive man-hours needed during the year for planning and execution. The 2nd Bomb Wing commander explained to the mayors of Shreveport and Bossier that doing the air show every other year would be the best way to effectively continue meeting their primary mission requirements.
Although I will miss it on the off years, I’m extremely pleased we will still have an air show. Some people don’t care for the shows for a number of reasons including the cost and safety factors. But I know a lot of people like me really appreciate the shows and the chance we have to see our military forces up close and personal. I am proud of Barksdale Air Force Base and what it has meant to my life. My wife and other family members wound up here because of the base as did countless friends and business associates. So I’m already looking forward to 2019 when I’ll be looking toward the sky again. And as sure as flying, I’ll probably see you there!
